Butteville General Store from the Willamette River

Our Heritage Room

Butteville General Store under J.J. Ryan

The Butteville General Store first opened in 1863. The first storekeeper in Butteville was F.X. Matthieu, who was instrumental in the provisional government vote at Champoeg in 1843. He traded furs with local Indians for grain and supplies.

J.J. Ryan and his wife Mary Rose operated the store in the late 1800s and early 1900s. In our heritage area, we have attempted to recreate the store at the turn of the century, complete with an old cash register that kids can use to ring up their stick candy purchases.
